Mòr-ionad Gàidhlig airson Dùn Èideann / Gaelic hub for Edinburgh
Results updated 16 Dec 2024
Ionad Gàidhlig Dhùn Èideann recently conducted a community survey about the possible benefits of a Gaelic Hub for Edinburgh – a social and cultural space where Gaelic speakers and learners in Edinburgh could come together for different kinds of Gaelic activities and events.
We asked how useful a hub would be for Edinburgh, how often people might use a hub and what activities and services people might like to see offered, and what might make a hub more or less appealing.
450 individuals and organisations completed the survey and gave us over 30,000 words of suggestions, recommendations and ideas – a fantastic response!
We have now prepared a detailed report on the results of the survey.
The results show overwhelming support for a Gaelic Hub in Edinburgh, providing a flexible space and the potential for a range of services and activities to support Gaelic speakers and Gaelic learners in the city.
85.4% of respondents said that a Gaelic hub would be very important for Edinburgh’s Gaelic community, and a further 9.4% said that it would be somewhat useful.
The survey gives us a clear path forward to establishing such a Gaelic space in Edinburgh and the detail of the results will be extremely valuable as we take the campaign forward.

Tha sinn airson measadh a dhèanamh air an iarrtas a dh’fhaodadh a bhith ann airson mòr-ionad agus faighinn a-mach dè bhiodh daoine ag iarraidh faicinn ann am mòr-ionad. Dè na rudan dham bu chòir prìomhachas a thoirt airson am mòr-ionad a dhèanamh feumail agus tarraingeach?
Is e sgrùdadh tùsail a tha an seo a tha a’ feuchainn ri beachdan agus miannan farsaing na coimhearsnachd a mheasadh. Bidh mòran cheistean pragtaigeach ag èirigh nas fhaide air adhart, gu sònraichte a thaobh maoineachadh agus àite a’ mhòr-ionaid, ach chan eil sinn aig an ìre sin fhathast.

Tha e gu sònraichte airson daoine a tha a’ fuireach ann an Dùn Èideann ach tha fàilte air daoine eile a tha ag iarraidh a lìonadh. Overview
This survey aims to explore the possibility of establishing a Gaelic ‘hub’ for Edinburgh – a social and cultural space where Gaelic speakers and learners in Edinburgh could come together for different kinds of Gaelic activities and events.
This survey is being conducted by Ionad Gàidhlig Dhùn Èideann, a charitable organisation that is working to develop a Gaelic hub and to promote Gaelic in Edinburgh.
We want to assess potential demand for a hub and find out what people might like to see offered in a hub. What things should be prioritised to make the hub useful and attractive?
This is an initial exploratory survey to assess the community’s general views and desires. There will be many important practical questions further ahead, especially concerning funding and a possible location, but we are not at that stage yet.
This survey is open to anyone aged 16 and over. It is primarily intended for Edinburgh residents but others are welcome to complete it. If you would like to respond on behalf of an organisation or group please contact ionaddhuneideann@gmail.com.
