We asked

for comments/input on how to redesign services for people with complex needs - substance misuse, homelessness, mental ill health, domestic abuse etc.

As part of the Inclusive Edinburgh review, people with lived experience were consulted. They highlighted the need for a ‘Go to Person’, who can support service users long term.

We did

Inclusive Edinburgh recognises the importance of using relationship capital as a catalyst in facilitating positive working relationships. This is a necessary precursor to successful change. If someone has been assessed as having significant difficulties in relating to others and is socially isolated, yet has developed a relatively good relationship with an individual, this person is the ‘go to’ person. This could be a professional or someone in their informal networks. Their role is to act as the link into other services. Agency expectations are that this person is supported in a longer term to maintain a central relationship with the individual. They can also have a role in garnering service user feedback on the effectiveness of a service provision from those who have become more stable. Therefore are more able to reflect on their experience from a ‘calmer place’.

Overview

Edinburgh is a city of contrasts, with high levels of both prosperity and poverty. It is vibrant, culturally diverse and exciting, but with areas of significant inequality and deprivation.

‘Inclusive Edinburgh’ is being set up to tackle some of the problems faced by people with complex needs. People who may struggle with homelessness, unemployment, drug and alcohol problems, mental or physical ill-health, who sometimes get involved in crime, and who are often the victims of violence.

The review will look at

  • how we all work at the moment
  • what we need to do to improve.

This will include housing, care, support, health, employment and protection services.

Why your views matter

Together with our partners in NHS Lothian, Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and a wide range of voluntary organisations, we are looking at all the services we provide in these areas. To do this effectively, we need to hear and understand people's views.

We want to work better together with all our partners in the city in order to improve people's access to good quality care, support and protection and to help them in participating better and more actively in the quality of life enjoyed by others.

We want to take a lead from people who use our services or who struggle to access them.

If you have any ideas on how we should improve our services to people with complex needs, contact us using the email address below.
