Summary

During 2014, the Council carried out an analysis of future jobs potential in Leith.  The study sits within the Council’s Economic Strategy: A Strategy for Jobs 2012-17. This study looked at:

• Leith’s distinctiveness as a place
• Leith’s business potential; and
• the opportunities for improvement and development. 

From this, a Leith Economic Framework and Study Report have been put together.   Although it is a Council document, the emphasis is on working in partnership and Leith-led delivery to achieve its goals.

Reasons for Study

Due to uncertainty of whether investment in renewable energy would happen as anticipated, the study set out to explore options for new jobs in the area.

The study contains a number of position statements and also considers how Leith could benefit from a tram extension.

Main Findings

• Deliver sustained improvements (eg gap sites, public art)
• Tell Leith’s story positively
• Stimulate new business by bringing more people to the area (eg events, attractions)
• Improve signs, access and transport links (eg tram)

Why your views matter

During the preparation of the Leith Economic Framework, we consulted the main business-oriented groups active in Leith and some of the partners and staff who support the work of the Leith Neighbourhood Partnership.  We also studied many plans and reports. 

We have collated the available information to the best of our ability and are now keen to seek wider input from organisations, businesses and local residents. We welcome views to improve the quality of information in the study report and ensure that the jobs framework meets the expectations of the community. 

The Economy Committee of 18 December 2014 approved an 8 week period of consultation and requested a report-back in April 2015.

What happens next

The views and suggestions received during the consultation period will be collated and analysed, and will be reported back to the Economy Committee in April 2015, together with any suggested amendments to the documents.

The final framework will also inform the next update of the Economic Development Service Operational Plan.
