Barnton Connections
Overview
We have proposals to improve walking, wheeling, and cycling conditions along Maybury Road from the new housing at Cammo Meadows, through Barnton junction and along Whitehouse Road as far north as Barnton Avenue West.
The changes would help the local community get to shops, schools and other important local facilities more easily and safely. They’ll be especially helpful for people living at Cammo, including the new Cammo Meadows housing, who currently have to cross the busy Barnton junction to get to the places they need.
The project aims to improve everyday mobility for everyone helping them stay connected to the places they rely on. It will do this by delivering:
- improved pavements and crossings making the area more accessible for pedestrians and wheelchair users and more pleasant spaces to spend time in.
- a cycle track segregated from vehicles and pedestrians, making it easier to cycle between Cammo Meadows and Whitehouse Road.
- better public spaces with new planting.
- improved connections, including linking into the National Cycle Network at Braepark Road and Barnton Avenue West.
- dedicated loading space for businesses on Whitehouse Road.
- changes to traffic movements including a new signalised junction with pedestrian crossings at Cammo Gardens, and lane changes at Barnton junction.
Project area
The project area includes:
- Maybury Road (between Cammo Meadows and Barnton Junction)
- Barnton Junction
- Whitehouse Road (between Barnton Junction and Barnton Avenue West)

Connecting to a wider network
As set out in our City Mobility Plan, we are facing a rapidly growing population and unsustainable levels of private car use which is increasing demand on our limited street space.
The 2016 Local Development Plan (LDP) and adopted City Plan 2030 identified significant areas of new housing development in west Edinburgh. Accompanying actions set out improvements to existing infrastructure and provide new infrastructure to provide safe and high-quality routes to enable more people to travel in sustainable ways. Proposals presented here will contribute to the delivery of these actions.
This project is part of a broader network of walking, wheeling and cycling connections across Edinburgh. You can find out further details of our city wide Future Streets proposals.
You can see how the current project fits into the proposed Future Streets cycle network below.
