Results updated 22 Aug 2022

On 16 August 2022, the Culture and Communities committee was presented with a report on the outcome of this consultation.

The committee members agreed to accept the recommendations in the report. They further agreed to review the number of walled or fenced greenspaces in the City, including those which permitted dog walking, and to update the Council's website accordingly; to establish a short life working group to discuss ways to better educate members of the public about the importance of cemetery spaces and their purpose; and to receive an update from officers in September 2023 with respect to compliance, complaints and any enforcement action in relation to the new cemetery management rules.

Overview

The City of Edinburgh Council (the Council) shall introduce a set of Cemetery Management Rules made under the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982. These draft Rules were approved for public inspection by the Culture and Communities Committee on 1 February 2022.

The Rules will regulate the behaviour of cemetery visitors, control of dogs and parking.

The Rules will apply to all 43 Council owned and operated cemeteries, graveyards, churchyards and kirkyards.

The Rules are also available for inspection on cemetery notice boards, at our office at Mortonhall by email request, and at  https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/burials-cremations.
