George Street and First New Town Design Project
Overview
We want to hear what you think about our next phase of the George Street and First New Town project and the design of the cross streets of North Castle Street, Frederick Street and Hanover Street (North).
The Council is committed to delivering our vision for the future of Edinburgh’s city centre as set out in the City Centre Transformation (CCT) project. We will change central Edinburgh to make it better for people walking, wheeling and cycling, and reduce the dominance of cars on city centre streets. The CCT project will also support the Council to deliver wider strategic priorities including the City Mobility Plan and 2030 Net Zero City commitments.

A key part of achieving this vision is the George Street and First New Town project, which includes George Street, North Castle Street, Frederick Street and Hanover Street, as well as the two gardens at either end of George Street, Charlotte Square and St Andrew Square.
In 2016, following an extensive programme of consultation and engagement, project design objectives were developed for the George Street and New Town area. Structured around these agreed design objectives, further extensive consultation informed the development of initial core concepts, which gathered broad public support, and were agreed at the Council’s Transport and Environment Committee on 16 May 2019. Agreed concepts included wider pavements, safer and more convenient crossing points, areas of seating providing opportunities for rest.
