Representing Faith and Religion in Museums and Galleries Edinburgh
Overview
Museums & Galleries Edinburgh is a collection of 13 venues and over 200 monuments across Edinburgh. Our vision is to inspire, enthuse and provoke through a shared passion for Edinburgh, Art and History. Our nine major visitor attractions are the City Art Centre; Lauriston Castle; Museum of Childhood; Museum of Edinburgh; Nelson Monument; People’s Story; Queensferry Museum; Scott Monument and Writers’ Museum. We house rich and varied collections relating to the historical and cultural life of Scotland’s Capital.
We’ve realised that most of our faith collection represents historic Christianity, and this does not accurately reflect the rich and varied landscape of worshipping communities in our city today. We’re therefore looking to expand our collections and gather objects which tell the stories of people of faith living in Edinburgh now.
We’d love to hear your views on how best we can do this.

What happens next
Thank you to everyone who responded to this survey.
This survey will help us to shape the future of our faith collections across Museums and Galleries Edinburgh. We aim to represent the breadth of religious expression in our city today and would love to hear your views on where you think our priorities should lie. This survey will help set priorities for how we will make our faith collections more inclusive and will enable us to take a strategic approach to setting out our priorities and target audiences.
Museums and Galleries Edinburgh will use the results of this survey to try to ascertain what faith items people want to see in our museums, what items can best represent people of faith and how the embodiment of a particular faith can best be communicated within a museum context. These results will be made public on Museums and Galleries Edinburgh’s website.
