Trams from Granton to Edinburgh BioQuarter and Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Beyond

Closes 17 Nov 2025

Opened 25 Aug 2025

Overview

We have been working on developing a business case to expand the tram network in Edinburgh.

With a west to east route, from the Airport to Newhaven, now successfully running, we are proposing a north to south route.

The route would run from Granton, through the city centre, out to the Edinburgh BioQuarter and Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh via Cameron Toll, and potentially beyond into the city region.

Your feedback will help us develop the next stage of the project which is the Strategic Business Case for a new tram line.

Proposed route and interactive map

The proposed route can be broken into three main sections:

  1. Granton to the city centre - from Granton to Ferry Road / Crewe Toll there is a single route. From Ferry Road / Crewe Toll to the city centre, two alternative route options are being considered: the Orchard Brae corridor or the Roseburn Path.
  2. City centre to Edinburgh BioQuarter and Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in the south
  3. Potential extensions beyond to Midlothian and East Lothian.

This is an interactive map.

Map shows the proposed route options for north to south: Granton to City Centre (Option 1: via Orchard Brae, Option 2: via Roseburn Path); City centre to Edinburgh BioQuarter and Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Included is the existing tram route and stops.

Previous studies have shown that tram is the best solution for this route supported by bus priority and bus rapid transit schemes.

The full proposed route forms the basis of analysis of costs and benefits at this stage of the work.

The map shows indicative locations for tram stops along the route. These may be subject to change, but have been selected based on

  • accessibility
  • physical and operational constraints
  • the opportunity to maximise the number of people forecasted to use the route.

More information can be found in a report that makes assessment of route options.
