Section 7: Sustainability, Resilience and Fair Work

The City of Edinburgh Council is committed to supporting a visitor economy that is fair, inclusive and sustainable. Through the Edinburgh Visitor Economy Improvement Fund, applicants are encouraged to demonstrate how their organisation and project contribute to Fair Work principles.

Fair Work helps create better workplaces, supports business resilience and productivity, improves employee wellbeing and contributes to a stronger visitor economy for Edinburgh. While not all principles may apply to every organisation, applicants should indicate those that best reflect their current practices and explain how these are being delivered.

  • Fair Pay - This includes paying employees fairly for the work they do. Applicants are encouraged to pay at least the Real Living Wage where possible and demonstrate a commitment to fair and transparent pay practices.
  • Effective Voice - Employees are encouraged to share ideas, provide feedback and contribute to decisions that affect their work through open communication, consultation or recognised staff engagement processes.
  • Opportunity - Providing equal opportunities for recruitment, progression, training and development, ensuring that employment practices are fair, inclusive and free from discrimination.
  • Security - Providing secure and stable employment wherever possible, with fair contracts, predictable working arrangements and support for employee wellbeing.
  • Fulfilment - Creating a positive working environment where employees are supported to develop their skills, feel valued and have opportunities to progress and contribute to the success of the organisation.
  • Respect
Promoting dignity, inclusion and equality in the workplace by fostering a culture where everyone is treated fairly and respectfully.
